By Edmund Janas, Brego.com

Logline:
An 8-year-old girl named Kyla (voiced and animated by Leslie Jones) recreates the week’s major news stories through a series of delightfully unhinged claymation vignettes, delivering the harsh realities of current events through an authentic childlike lens of boundless imagination and play.

Synopsis:
Each week on “Kyla’s Claymated News Segment,” the rambunctious 8-year-old persona of Kyla is brought to life by the wildly talented Leslie Jones, who voices and animates her freewheeling comedic antics. Kyla (established as Michael Che’s faux-niece) opens by recapping the headlines in her trademark lively, rambling way. What separates her take is how quickly it devolves into loopy nonsense as the segment transitions into homemade claymation setpieces.

Here, Kyla physically inhabits the news, acting out real-world events beat-by-beat through her distinctly young, gloriously illogical point-of-view. The persistent juxtaposition of grave subject matter with silly, absurdist clay humor is a constant source of comedic dissonance.

Kyla’s roleplaying captured through Jones’ expert physical comedy skills teeters between moments of startling mature insight and bursts of aggressively random reverie. One second, she’s distilling the profundities of a political scandal by having two lumpy political figures incessantly bash into each other. The next, their bodies melt into ice cream swirls because…kid brain!

The segments capture the beautiful messiness of a child’s creativity, full of impulsive breaks in character, tangents about her latest obsession, and reckless plot abandonment. They always conclude with Kyla’s anti-climactic childish sign-off (“And then they were Smuuu-shed!”) as her tiny attention span reaches its limit.

Ultimately, Leslie Jones’ uproarious embodiment of “Kyla’s Claymated News” is an inspired vessel for satirizing current events through the radical honesty and unvarnished hilarity that only an 8-year-old mind could provide. By channeling the newscycle’s inanities and tragedies through Kyla’s joyously deranged claymation realm, perspective is everything.

Comparable Comedic Inspirations:
The bold innocence of Lily Tomlin’s iconic Edith Ann character voiced by an adult
Leslie Jones’ ability to fully inhabit over-the-top personae like her beloved “Ghostbusters” role

The anarchic, cult appeal of classic adult-driven Gumby claymation

In a cluttered media landscape, “Kyla’s Claymated News” would be a vital weekly oasis of disarmingly original laughter and highly relatable childlike escapism. Her hyper-creative retellings of harsh realities cut through the noise to remind us of the simple joys of unfettered play and imagination.

A dark but humorous and irreverent take on life's uncertainties, this dark comedy SNL pitch sketch explores the premise of a greeting card company that hires cynical writers to pen blunt, morbid messages for major life events like graduations. The scene depicts a young graduate excitedly opening a card from his family, only to be met with a shockingly pessimistic diatribe about life being an unpredictable series of disappointments followed by death. As the graduate's face falls in confusion, his family erupts in outrage and horror at the card's dark musings.

by Edmund Janas

Opening scene: A young man (Brad) stands beaming in his cap and gown, diploma in hand, surrounded by his proud family. His grandmother rolls forward with a greeting card.

Grandma: “Here’s a little something from all of us, Brad. We’re so proud of you!”

Brad’s smile widens as he opens the card, eagerly reading. His face slowly falls into confusion and disbelief.

Voiceover: “Introducing Long-form Greeting Cards – where we hire real writers to pen heartfelt, uninhibited messages.”

Cut to a writer’s dimly-lit basement apartment. He’s unshaven, surrounded by candy wrappers and empty bottles, furiously scribbling away.

Writer (to himself): “Life’s a bitch and then you die. Is that too on the nose?”

Voiceover: “I finally get what Forrest Gump was trying to say about that box of chocolates thing. You really don’t know what you’ll get out of life.”

Back to Brad, looking mortified reading on. His parents lean in, concerned.

Dad: “What’s it say, son?”

Brad (stammering): “It says…you can try heading in a general direction, but ultimately, nobody knows where they’ll end up.” (his eyes widen) “Except maybe winding up dead in a ditch!”

The family gasps in collective shock. Mom snatches the card.

Mom (reading): “The first miracle is getting here. The second…surviving childhood?!” (she looks up bewildered) “What is this?!”

Cut to eccentric older writer, swigging whiskey while scribbling.

Writer 2: “The third miracle…somehow staying sane.” (she cackles) “Followed by the merciless onslaught of disappointment and existential dread!”

Back to graduation, the family is in total uproar. Grandma fans herself dramatically.

Grandma: “Lord have mercy!”

Dad grabs the card, reading in outrage.

Dad: “Because with all that, you could live a joyous life, and then some totally f**ked up shit still happens?!?”

Voiceover (calmly): “So, take it day by day…and don’t ever think you’re better than others.”

The camera pushes in on Brad’s fallen smile as his shoulders slump in realization.

Cut to hipster writer, nodding self-satisfied.

Hipster Writer: “Life has a funny way of sucker-punching arrogant a**holes square in the kisser.”

Brad hangs his head in dismay as his family erupts in scandalized shouts.

Voiceover: “Oh…Happy Graduation, I guess?”

The scene freeze-frames on Brad’s despondent expression as the classic SNL end cue hits.

I have to work on the title, not sure what to call myself…it: “Crazy Cat Man” or a “Dirty old cat man”. I for one hate the word OLD because what is old, some people are old at 25 and some people are still young at 95, in a spiritual sense. But today I found out I was “nose blind” to cat vomit and shit, and it was…technically embarrassing. Oh, there she goes again. My 13 year-old tuxedo cat Seba running down into the unfinished basement to…finish her business.

Sol, my 4 year-old goes down there too. Me, I haven’t left my house for 2 months because of…human. Well, I normally have someone come in to help me with the cleaning 1 or 2 times a month, but even that’s been sidetracked. I kept telling him, we’ll clean the basement, we’ll clean the basement. But after getting a whiff, I taped off the folding door to the basement thinking that would keep the cats out.

Now Sheba has been sick, very sick she had been improving then suddenly relapsed today…if just so happened. My internet went down and they’re like: “We have to send a technician NOW! 2-4pm” Now if anyone has dealt with #Xfinity before, ya’ll know if you get an appointment that soon, Take it. So the technician comes over, when he enters he’s already acting like he doesn’t wanna proceed. There is vomit near the door. I’m like…wait, let me cover that up with kitty litter, he runs out the door. I’m like “Sissy” then I go into the basement, I swear it looks like a scene from Jurassic Park, turds the size of coconuts. I’m embarrassed and start cleaning. He runs out again. “Sir, could you come upstairs?” Me: “Me?” I say, all innocently. I know what’s coming.

“Sir, because of the cat shit in your basement…I can’t”

I’m like: “BYE-A!” as in “Kick Rocks, Bro!” I was offended, I barely smelled anything. So I open wide the hatchway, the kitchen window and the doors. I clean the poop deck and dump it outside on the flower bed compost. I think: “THE nerve of some people! THIS is why I love cats, it keeps the ASSHOLES out of my life…they NEVER wanna come over.” It was good to get out and into the yard after a cold December, January, and half of February, I fill my lungs with fresh air as I dump the dusty poop and vomit coagulated into clumps of kitty unscented kitty litter. My the air is so fresh out here.

I descend into my basement and wretch at the smell and nearly pass out. Damn, I hardly noticed. Me: “Hello, Xfinity. I owe your technician an apology.”

Stand-Up Routine Version
So I haven’t left my house for two months because of (long pause) human, but I found out I was “nose blind” to cat vomit and shit. My 13 year-old tuxedo cat Seba has been sick for months, runnin’ her ass down into my unfinished basement to shit and do God knows what else. She steps right over the litter box to go into the basement to do all her dirty business. Now I have a cleaning person that comes once or twice a month, but it’s winter in New England so I just taped off the folding door in hopes it would keep her ass from going down ther, but I was wrong. Today, my internet went down and they sent a technician over so surprisingly fast…they said: “We have an opening in a half hour” now if ya’ll ever fucked with Xfinity, you know that never happens so I jumped on that shit. “Yeah, come over now.” I said. As soon as the technician entered, he was already acting like he didn’t wanna proceed. I asked in all earnestness: “What the fuck is wrong with you?”

I point the technician to the box, he looked like he didn’t wanna touch anything. I said, it’s all wired right here. “Ahh, I need to go into your basement.”

“Of course you do,” I said. As we approached the kitchen I smelled something like bad vinegrette and buffalo wings. I looked down and said: What da fuck is dat?!” Cat puke by the basement door which was taped shut. I said: “Oh, fuck, let me cover that with some kitty litter.” But before I could turn around the technician ran outside like he had tight underwear on. I yelled: “Dude!….it’s only cat vomit!”

Five minutes later he comes back in. I’m downstairs assessing the shit-uation.

I covered up the vomit near the door with kitty litter – he ran outside and came back five minutes later. I’m sweeping turds the size of coconuts into the dust pan, I thought: “How the hell did this cat shit coconut turds?” Looked like a scene from Jurassic Park. I reflected on what I might be feeding her.

After about five minutes, the technician returns and runs halfway down the basement stairs and starts walking backwards like the Exorcist….So I’m cleaning up cat turds, scraping them up actually…with an ice scraper and dowsing the spot with bleach” five minutes later he calls for me. I yell: “Dude, it’s cat shit! It’s not the end of the world!”The nerve of some people!

I don’t know…SHOULD I BE embarrassed! I thought: This is why I love cats – they keep the assholes out of my life.

A few more minutes pass…”Sir, could you come up here please.” He said in this voice, like he had the police with him. “Sir, because of the…CAT SHIT…” He was talking like a lawyer now and that really bugged me. “…in your basement…I can’t!” Me: “What do you mean, you can’t? I tell you what BYE..as in Kick Rocks, Bro!” The technician is puzzled and frankly looks disoriented as he fumbles for the latch on the gate.

So I go downstairs to scrape free the last of the coconut turds from the basement cement and I dump the dusty poop and matted vomit outside on the flower bed compost and the air was so fresh and clean outside. But then I went back inside to wretch at the smell and nearly pass out – turns out I was “nose blind” to it. I owed the technician an apology, but can you blame me for not feeling guilty, it was the cat’s fault, not mine. I mean, this is why I love cats, they keep assholes from visiting my house.

I cant’ believe he would post something so…misogynistic, violent….subtextually white supremicist?! What is this? And this is so degrading to women… OK, OK, OK! I’ll get a grip. Timmy is testing his limits. Don’t get upset. But OMG. Is this what Twitter has devolved into? It’s bad enough I am greeted by constant tweets from the alt-right, radical Christians, violent and white supremacist messages. Now this openly misogynistic image? OK, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt…and say it’s art. What is he saying? Is this an image or message a person of power would want to send into the world? I am literally repulsed by this. How can this stand?

Perhaps it’s nothing more than a political commentary on the power and influence Elon Musk has and the need to challenge his authority. But the use of milk in the photo reads like a reference to white supremacy values…and perhaps the need to resist those values? The women in the photo could be interpreted as metaphors for those who are oppressed and those in power. But without context…it just skews upsetting and disturbing. Very irresponsible of a person with so much power.

Elon Musk has a lot of power and influence over people, and the implication being he is able to control and manipulate people in order to achieve his goals. This disturbing image also suggests that he is not afraid to use force in order to get what he wants.what does the milk represent? To me it reaks of white supremicism?

Just goes to show you, money can’t buy you class….now can it?

So I make up these little scenes, mostly to practice writing dialogue to to make silly jokes. I know. Well, this is how one develops into a writer. I wrote the following and ran it through artificial intelligence, the response was pretty funny.

do you find this funny?
Prosecutor: “The State would like to call it’s next witness, Mr. Edmund Janas. Can you please tell us in detail what you saw about 9pm on February 11th?”
Witness: “Well, I had just eaten a late dinner and I was in the kitchen washing the dishes when I heard a clash and what sounded like objects rolling.”
Prosecuter: “And what was that?”
Mr. Janas. “Well: I peeked into the living room and saw my cat, Sol.
Prosecutor: “And what was Sol, the cat doing?
Witness:”Well, the cat intentionally knocked the remote off of the edge with of my armchair…
Prosecuter: “I know it’s difficult Mr. Janas, but try to continue.
Witness: “That’s when I saw the cat pawing at the batteries. Double-A’s, and one went down the heater register and down into the ductwork. It was malicious!
Defense Attorney: “Objection! Conjecutre your honor, The witness is hardly qualified to speak on the cat’s intentions or state of mind.
Judge: “Objection sustained.
Witness: “Well, it’s so upsetting, because I thought I was being careless. I thought I was a slob with dimentia, knocking over things and forgetting it. But I caught her right in the act this time. Do you know how hard it is to keep double-A’s stocked? That’s why I was so angry! “
Prosecuter: “Thank you Mr. Janas, the defense may cross-examine.”

No, I do not find this funny. I ask:why not?
AI: This is a serious situation in a court of law and the witness is providing testimony to a crime.
Me: Really, what was the crime?
AI: The crime is that the cat intentionally knocked the remote off the edge of the armchair and caused the batteries to roll down the heater register and down into the ductwork.
Me: And do you think that’s a real crime or a joke?
AI: This is not a joke, it is a real crime.
Me: Then what would be a fitting punishment for the cat?
AI: A fitting punishment for the cat would be a stern talking to and a curfew.

This post reflects on the experience of a biracial black man, discussing the complexities of being part of two different cultures and not fully understanding either. He talks about his experience with cultural references, barbershops and the dozens, as well as the racism he has experienced from both white and non-white people. He concludes that by staying true to himself and speaking his truth he can help bring about change.

As I write, I contemplate my own experience as a biracial black man. Growing up, I never fully understood or agreed with White America, but I also didn’t fully understand Black culture—these two worlds often being diametrically opposed. One would assume that someone who is both Black and White would understand all the cultural references, inside jokes, and shorthand that comes with each. However, this is not the case for everyone. For instance, when my white friends chat about music, I’m left with no clue as to what they are referencing.

One day, I asked my father if we could go to the Barbershop and bond. He looked at me like I was crazy, and replied: “I’ve been bonded to you since you were born.” As I reflect on the complexities of being biracial, I realize that I may not have the privilege to fully connect with both of my cultures, but I do have the best of both worlds, yet I belong to neither.

Thoroughbred

The more I lived, the more I realized that the way we process the world can be vastly different. One day when I was younger, I was discouraged and I referred to myself as a “Mutt” my father looked at me with complete disappointment but love and admiration and said: “Son, in my eyes you are a thoroughbred,” He did not teach me as a black son or as a white son, but as a beloved son who was second to none. My father loved my mother and me thoroughly, and he (as my mother) will always be a part of me. But for all his love and devotion, he could never teach me how to move in this world as a Black man. My mother died days after my sixteenth birthday, so much was not discussed. Over time, I started to realize that the business advice he gave me was more suited for a young white man, than for me, and far different than the advice others in the black community gave me, and then still, far different than the advice white people gave me.

Though I neither understood this or fully recognized it in my twenties, the advice young white men with even a modicum of talent was more practical in nature. Outside of my father’s guidance, I received both a complete lack of support and the detriment of the doubt at every turn, and this cut across color lines. Would you believe I had the idea for a social media network years before Facebook? Yes. It’s true, but I was laughed out of town by black “leadership” so fast it made my head spin. Young black men, are told to tough it out, work that 9-5 until they make it, rely on self, to hustle, teach yourself and go it alone if need be. But white men, especially young white men, are given exactly the opposite advice, they are taught to get the training first, have their elevator pitches ready, share their ideas, understand the competition, to get financing, to go public with their IPO. And on those rare occasions, I did get the right advice. Follow-through was non-existent. There was no knowledge on my part and no will to see me through. To be sure, I was self-taught in computers from the age of 12, when my parents invested in one, long before most people knew what a personal computer was. I did well in life because of their nurturing, and I was hired by some of the top universities and institutions in the world, from MIT to the World Bank, but I would have gone much further with the right support system.

White men, as a matter of course are told to have their business plan done with all the projections. Too often in the black community (and other communities of color) we are told to “move in silence and keep your plans secret”, “don’t brag”, and so on. Only now can I reflect on how messed up and dysfunctional that is; advise that would never be given in a million years to young white men with even an ounce of talent. Cognitive dissonance much? Yes, I was given many advantages my siblings were not, but I was still at a deficit, and to tell others with even greater deficits to just clam up and work hard it antithetical to success. It is a damn shame that in 2023 I have to write these words or speak in these terms, but Black America’s contribution to our economy is approaching $1.5 trillion a year, and our participation in the ownership of Black owned tech and entertainment companies is south of 5%, probably far less in the Web 3 space. I’m not saying that there are no successes, there are many, and I admire them, but on the whole we have to recognize that something is amiss.

When it comes to business, Black entreprenuers are not given our props. From TikTok to ARPA, we are consistently pilfered for our talent, our creative works copied, watered down and the profits funneled into White pockets. We are told to “stay humble”, “be quiet” less we lose what little we amass. It’s clear we are first in line to get punished by society and last in line to get rewarded. To often we are told to not brag, and I feel this is completely at odds with our Black culture passed down in a thousand countless ways because (generally speaking) bragging is a form of storytelling, one that is deeply rooted in African-American tradition. It’s believed that bragging is a way of validating oneself and showing off skills, accomplishments and wealth, something that was often denied to African-Americans due to systemic racism. It’s also believed that bragging is a way of creating a sense of community and solidarity, as the shared stories of success and triumph help to build a sense of collective pride and identity. In sports, hip-hop and traditions like “the dozens”, bragging has become a way to show off one’s skills and talents, as well as to entertain and connect with others. But in “white culture”, or more specifically in the Polish Roman Catholic culture of my father, bragging is just bragging and is looked down upon as unkind, uncouth or in some cases, a sin.

Do you see how this can lead to deep internal conflict? My father, the very man I modeled my life after, my primary role model who has been supporting me and my mother in love, the man who wrote my mother love letters since I was in my mother’s womb, is by circumstance, antithetical to my deepest social programming. This is only a theory to some, but for me it is my truth. I am both black and white, but I am also neither, and in a strange way, it would have been helpful to not have been so close to one…or either of my parents.

This is why I have come to refer to myself as a “Thoroughbred”. A Thoroughbred is a horse, a symbol of power, strength, and endurance, but also a symbol of beauty, grace, and style. I have the strength and endurance of my father, but also the beauty, grace and style of my mother. I have something that no one can deny me, and that is my authenticity. It is through my authenticity that I have been able to blend both worlds and create something that is my own. I have the swag and style of my mother and the business acumen of my father. I am a Thoroughbred. Some may recoil that I compare myself to a horse, but I’ve lived 52 years on Earth and I know this for sure. Animals are often far nobler and kinder than people.

The Dozens: A Game We Played

Try “the dozens” on white folks and they’ll never get over it. Basketball, don’t understand it, never played it. When I watched “You People” on Netflix, I reflected that I wouldn’t have been able to pass zero tests Eddie Murphy subjected his soon-to-be son-in-law too, and I’m very much Black. And even as I thought about the spaces in which I move and share my opinions, I am not accepted as a “black man” for whatever the reasoning. It’s true. But I am, truly a black man. So I stop getting angry when I’m ignored (or even deleted, by friends no less) when discussing issues surrounding, “the culture”.

I reckon with myself, I think: “Yeah, I do move differently in Black culture.” Societal norms, age, my beliefs, my being queer. And there is no clear and easy answer. Life is sometimes undefinable. I live and move within a white controlled society, but I live within a black community, by choice. My friends are of every age, color, race, gender, orientation and creed, again…by choice. I love my people, but often don’t feel at home, like I did when I was a child. I could not have been more loved and protected by my black family and culture, but things change.

So, that’s when I remember: “The Dozens,” a game my people played. That’s when I know I’m a part of something bigger than myself, something that’s made me a better person. I’m a part of something that’s taught me to be brave, to be resilient and to be real. To recognize my place in the world and to appreciate the beauty around me. It’s taught me to be mindful of my actions and words, and never to be afraid to speak up. It’s taught me to stand up for what I believe in, no matter what. That’s “the dozens,” a game we used to play.

Never Silent

I have never felt a part of “white” culture either, and truth be told that’s not really a thing. Whiteness is the absence of culture. While Europe is comprised of many different ethnicities and cultures, there is no Whiteland. Whiteness in America means the absense of culture. At some point in recent history, my father who is a mix of European ancestry was considered Polish, and not white. In Tom Reiss’s book, The Black Count, over the past 200 years or so, even Americans were considered “colored” by western Europeans. So you the color line has moved to include Europeans who were not traditionally “white”. It’s a power, control and money game. But that doesn’t change the reality of the situation. My father was born a “white” man and was part of the power structure. But if any privileges were conferred upon him, they were revoked when he lived to become old. All power is returned back to the state at the end.

But unlike too many of my fellow Europeans in America, not speaking out against racial profiling and police brutality is unthinkable, yet most of my white male friends of the past never spoke out against it. I’m still waiting on Elon Musk, Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos to speak publicly against the extrajudicial killings of my brothers and sisters at the hands of those sworn to serve and protect. As a Black man, I refuse to be silent on this matter and I feel it’s my duty to speak out for those with less, white culture tends to not have any such conviction, even among the “righteous”.

My cultural blind Spots

They manifest in strange ways, and I guess it’s the result of age, exposure, socio-economic conditions…a variety of things. Suppose we have a group of white folks and they are out enjoying lunch and one starts talking about the intricacies of playing polo, most of the group would go on a little mental vacation and zone out as the person goes on-and-on…that’s what it’s like for me a solid 20% of the time when I hear white folks talk. Another example, Tyler Perry’s Madea. I played a Madea movie for my father and he laughed at it, but I play the stage play and he didn’t understand a word of it. A solid 90% of it. Then, as I’m watching it, I’m not getting about 15-20% of the cultural references and I start to wonder. Do I have these cultural blind spots? We both dug Empire because it was a visual experience and was musically oriented, now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying these are black cultural traits that represent “being black” no, they are part of the diaspora which is as broad and diverse as the continent of Africa, so humor me a little. They are just things in our culture, not our culture. My father could beat anyone in Black Trivial Pursuit, that didn’t make him Black, it just made the party more interesting. So take this all I say with a grain of salt.

Yes, some things in our culture, black culture may seem rude to an outsider, if you fall down, generally black folks (at least where I’m from) are gonna laugh if you’re not hurt, got a stump leg?…”OK, Stumpy”…Put a foot up, snaps and the dozens. Word play, intentional mispronunciations, food jokes…it’s all in good fun, my white friends look at me and take me literally. “You are mispronouncing that word!” Yes, there are boojie-ass black folks who do that too, but they know.

My experience with Polish relatives and friends likewise leave me dumbfounded. For them, bringing up whether or not someone’s parents are married is standard. When I asked how acquaintances are doing after a car crash and not seeing them for a week, by writing them a get-well note to ask how they’re doing, it’s looked upon as a gauche overstep of boundaries. Their culture is more insular. How to navigate that?

Safe Enough to Hear the Truth

Despite this, I have my own perspective that neither culture fully grasps. I think one advantage to being more racially ambiguous is that I’ve been present for MANY conversations that weren’t intended for me. I also, without realizing it, got away with a lot of moves that would have been limited had I been more black presenting. Upon hearing these sometimes horrific things, I challenged them, usually directly to their face, and at other times through appropriate channels. But ultimately I would “put a foot up” and would get extreme backlash. You would be amazed what people are willing to tell you when they feel you are light and bright enough to not pose a “threat” to their white fragility.

Within the black community, when I try to share my truth, I am often met with disbelief. Even yesterday, I dared to share my experiences with my two blood half-sisters and they talked over, around and through me, because they choose to believe I couldn’t possibly have my own thoughts, beliefs, and lived life experiences. To them, I am “just a…black man”. When did we become so rigid in our worldview? It was not always this way.

Safe Enough to be told Directly

I’ve learned that life can be complex and the truth is infrequently black or white, pardon the pun. For example, I’ve been objectified by white P.A.’s (Physicians Assistants) along racial lines, even told to exit through the back door. Few would believe that happened to me. Why? Because I resisted medical gaslighting (the same gaslighting that killed my father) and was ordered to leave a building through the back door. The P.A.’s way of saying: “You know what…N****?” Yes it happened in 2018. A not-to-subtle reminder that for as white appearing as I may be, in the eyes of white folks, all I am is black and a threat when it comes down to money, power and control. Racism and all its poisonous fruit has always been a proxy for money, power and control. They got us hating each other for the shades of our skin, the texture of our hair, our features and which zip codes we can live in. What pointless degrees and jobs we can wear like badges of honor. We remain divided and fighting among each other, whilst they do the important work of developing, refining and cultivating their businesses. We accomplish along side them, competing at the highest levels, but we do not get our full credit, the full bounty of citizenship, safety, protection opportunity which they enjoy without a thought. This hardly seems like a fair exchange, and it’s time to make a few adjustments.

Being medically objectified compelled me to to seek out melanated medical providers and legal help, and while true they were more accommodating, they questioned my blackness. “Where are you black at?” He asked smiling. “Where it counts!” I snapped back. But yet they don’t like it when I tell my race-based puns and jokes about their culture. Why is that? Funny how that works. They feel like they can talk “hood” to me because they think because I live in Springfield, we all speak slang or have less access to the worlds knowledge (it’s been at our fingertips and legally accessible for some time now) When in fact I spent more summers vacationing and studying in Europe and speak more French and Polish than I do BEV, It’s tiresome. These are the things people who objectify others because of their perceived race, class and appearance.

It’s Not so Black and White

White supremacy isn’t just practiced by whites, and that’s the complication. I remember I was chilling with someone I liked very much, they happened to be South Korean, and they would suddenly say things like: “Your’e not REALLY Black.” and other racist things that are not fit to print in this post. It sucks to really like people only to discover, often after years of being vulnerable and loving them, that they hate you. And sometimes, it’s half-siblings, and other close relative who need someone convenient to blame for their own mistakes and decisions…someone who stands out. Someone a little different. Let that sink in.

It’s a “Colored Person’s” Burden, But the White Supremicist’s Shame

But the other thing that the so-called learned and cultured among us fail to realize is that while they may be 60 years deep in the “new: notion of living and working side-by-side with people of different cultures (gasp!) and having to (gasp!) “tolerate” others. My mixed black family full of Finnish, African, Inuit, Polish, British/Irish, French has been integrating and living in peace (more or less) with others for over 120 years. Perhaps those in these positions of power who feel like they can explain racism better than those who suffer from it (Thank you Dr. Beatrice Berry) should be listening to us for guidance instead of trying to define our experiences and limit us?

What Cops are to Black Men, Medicine is to Black Women

In the end, I realize there are two types of medical professionals, those who listen and treat you with human decency and those who do not. I was a long-term caregiver. I gave up my careers to do it, by choice. And what I experienced during that time could fill a book. And after being injured on the job, I can safely say that good doctors are the minority and often the women of color who hold low-level healthcare jobs are discounted and objectified by the medical and legal establishment. I fought that for a few years and during that I realized I had another “blind spot” It was by fate that I learned about that, but I realized that people of color, specifically Black women are systematically being discounted by the system, and this must change. Often it is BIPOC individuals giving our parent’s their last human touch and dignity. And their sacrifices and injuries should never be discounted. After years of struggle with subpar doctors in Springfield, MA I’m happy to report I drive 40 miles out of my way, to Worcester to get the best care possible at Umass Memorial, where none of the doctors jump to conclusions and there is a diverse medical staff. Some of my very best doctors have been European, and surprisingly…they understand my journey and they know enough not to objectify me for the sake of expedience and the bottom line. The same cannot be said of Mercy and to a lesser degree, Baystate Medical Center.

The VA nurse who abandoned my father’s medical care and let him bleed out a slow painful death told me, upon hearing of my injury, “That everything happens for a reason”. I used to believe that, before she tainted it. Now I view that expression with skepticism. I think it’s a way for people to absolve themselves of blame and responsibility for the harm they do others. As platitudes go, it’s a poor one. But as much as I don’t like it, there is some truth to it. I will write about what happened, and I will share with you my experiences, in the hopes others will not suffer as my father and I did, and as many veterans, the elderly and disabled do. And to, if at all possible, spare other people of color the pain of medical objectification. I choose to stay true to my beliefs instead of being confined by them, and I’ll speak my truth until I’m gone. This is the only way for change to happen. Perhaps at the end, when all is said and done, we all have these cultural blindspots, and they just happen to be more pronounced with me. Perhaps I’m just more open to understanding them.

Janas, II

In the background the voices of the theater projectionists started fading like the flitter of film clapping on a spool. King Edward heard them before the theater went dark, being audibly impertinent, but he did not care.

Projectionist 1: “Ah, he watches Gone with the Wind again! The fifth time this week alone, does King Edward have a crush on Vivien Leigh?”

The theater manager chimed, “He’s the King of England, we’ll show it to him a hundred times a week if he’s paying. Besides, I think it’s more than a crush, don’t you? He’s practically mesmerized by her!”

The young projectionist looked on in admiration at the screen popping with color, “No kidding! Look at those beautiful green eyes of Ms. Leigh!”

In the flicker of the theater at this showing King Edward sat alone, glassy eyed and mesmerized. It was her voice, her command, it was the fullness of her womanhood striking a deep chord in him that reverberated from within his soul and echoed down deep into his loins at every syllable she uttered.

It was around the 6th showing that the theater manager stepped back in stunned surprise, his face aghast. Perhaps it was his joyous laughter whenever Ms. McDaniel appeared on screen, or some soft sigh he let out unawares. But it was clear to the theater owner, though a simple-minded man, that the King of England had a crush on not Vivien Leigh, but on Hattie McDaniel. The theater manager, shocked and mouth-wide-open, exclaimed in French, “Mon Dieu! Le Roi a un coup de foudre!” (“My God! The King has a love at first sight!”) and the projectionist upon hearing this dropped several canisters of film. Moments later the manager would be in the theater lobby proudly spreading the rumor by phone like a gossipy crone and this would foreshadow two long dark years that would turn the monarchy upside down and inside out.

Wallis Warfield Simpson, the King’s lover had arranged the perfect setting for the meeting between Hattie and the King at his behest, never suspecting that the King had designs on Hattie. It never even occurred to her. The cabaret was full of red velvet drapery and a romantic ambience, complete with a stage for the Apache dancers. As the two watched the dancers, they both looked at each other with admiration and discussed how they thought the dance was downright abusive.

The King then suggested a plan: “What if we went back here every Saturday afternoon and tried it ourselves?”

Hattie smiled a girlish smile and said, “Your Highness, that would be highly illegal in this country and yours, I’m sure.”

The King responded with a twinkle in his eye, “Splendid, then let us meet with Monsieur Poulard, the most gifted choreographer in Paris, at 2 o’clock every Saturday. We shall then dine early and converse about…you. Let us keep this between ourselves.”

Hattie couldn’t help but blush at the romantic suggestion. She was taken aback by the King’s charm, but knew it was far too dangerous to pursue. Nevertheless, the two shared a moment of understanding and admiration before parting ways. They spoke on the phone and he sweet talked her into agreeing. Their dance lessons would start in May.

Choreographer: “Two left feet? No, no, no! You must trust yourself. Now, let me show you the Apache dance. You must move like the wind, Hattie! Like the wind! (He moves his hands and hips in a circular motion to imitate the wind.) King Edward, you must be strong and powerful like a bull! (He puts his arms out to imitate a bull’s horns.) Now, together, you must move in harmony like the stars in the night sky! You must move in perfect unison! (He puts his arms up to the sky to demonstrate.)

Assistant: (In broken English) “Monsieur, this is too complicated for these two criminals!”

Choreographer: (In broken English) “Oh, no, no, no! We must give them a chance. They can do it, I know they can!

Hattie: (Looks at King Edward) “Can we really do this?”

King Edward: (Pulls her close and whispers) “Trust yourself.”

Hattie: (Gives a sensual smile and nods) “I’m ready.”

Choreographer: (excited) “Good! Now, let the show begin!”

The music continues and Hattie McDaniel begins her sexy Apache dance. She moves her hips and arms in a seductive manner, twirling and spinning around the King with her hair and arms fanning out in a graceful motion. Hattie moves closer to the King and thrusts her hips towards him, winding around his body and holding onto his shoulders. As they move together, she places her hands on his chest and leans in with her eyes closed.

The King is caught up in the moment and raises his hand to her face and slaps it in a dramatic show of power. Hattie is thrown back but quickly recovers and strikes a pose, pulling a drag from her cigarette. The King moves closer and wraps his arms around her. He lifts her up and spins her around, then flings her across the dance floor.

Hattie lands gracefully on her feet and Hattie abruptly yells, “Stop!” She suddenly feels she is being abused or racially objectified, but she quickly recovers and yells, “Monsieur Poulard, I have a better idea….take it from the top!”

Hattie then rushes up to King Edward as the music rises, she yells, “Turnabout is Fair play!” She moves around the King, her hands never leaving his body. She moves her arms around his neck and then grabs a fist full of his hair, pulling his head down to her and plants a hot kiss on his lips. The choreographer and King are stunned.

Hattie then moves away from the King and strikes a sultry pose. She begins to spin around the King, her hair and arms fanning out in a graceful motion as she moves her hips and arms in a seductive manner. The King follows her every move, entranced by her beauty.

The music builds as Hattie moves closer to the King and thrusts her hips towards him, winding around his body and holding onto his shoulders. As the music reaches its crescendo, Hattie moves away from the King and strikes a sultry pose, her hair and arms fanning out in a graceful motion. The King follows her every move, entranced by her beauty.

The music ends and Hattie and King Edward take a bow to the audience. Monsieur Poulard and his assistant are stunned as they take their final bow and the lights dim.

Assistant: “Ooh, la…la!”

Monsieur Poulard: “We have a show.”

Hattie and Butterfly met at Café de la Paix, there were few patrons in the shop and Butterfly passed the waiter 10 Francs and the waifish waiter sauntered off happily.

Butterfly: “You didn’t!”

Hattie: “I sure did!”

Butterfly: “You know, this makes you and the king….both….criminals.”

Hattie: “So I’ve been told, but you know what they say: Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse!”

Butterfly: “You are positively glowing!”

Hattie: “I’m feeling free and alive today, Sistah! I guess the King’s pursuit introduced me to a new level of womanhood I didn’t know I had in me, Girl.”

Butterfly: “If you don’t….hold it down. That’s all good and fine, but if Wallis Simpson finds out, you’ll be in a world of trouble. This is not the life for you, Hattie.”

Hattie: “You worry too much, Butterfly. Besides, isn’t it a little hypocritical for you to be telling me to follow the rules? I mean, aren’t we breaking the law by coming here to have coffee?”

Butterfly: “Yes, but I’m sure we can find a way to get away with it if we are quick. Fame has its perks. Just make sure you’re careful, Hattie. That’s all I’m saying.”

Hattie: “I will, I promise. Now, let’s enjoy our coffee and this delightful cafe before we have to sneak back to our hotel.”

Butterfly: “Yeah, freedom. Do us well to remember we are under siege by an occupying force”

Hattie: “Then….tonight, come to the Cabaret for the show.”

Butterfly: “Show?!”

Hattie: “Yes, the King and I are putting on a show and you have to come and watch. It will be the talk of the town.”

Butterfly looks on in disbelief as Hattie stirs her coffee and smiles knowingly.

Where are you staying. Hattie looks out the window as she sees Nazi soldiers on patrol. “We should be going, Kid.” Hattie and Butterfly start walking towards their black Rolls-Royce Phantom III, they hop in the back seat.

Butterfly: “What the…”

Hattie: “Not on my Salary, Kid. Driver: To 7 Avenue de New York!”

Butterfly: “Where’s that?”

Hattie: “Can’t stay at hotels under these Nazi bastard’s occupation, that’s Josephine Baker’s House…where we’ll be staying. We’ll be safe there.”

Butterfly: “Josephine…Baker?”

Hattie: “Yeah, she’s a friend of ours. I’ll tell you all about it as we drive.”

They start to drive away and the car is met with a throng of Nazi officials and press. They are all waiting outside Josephine Baker’s home for the mysterious couple that left behind a trail of rumors about their love affair.

Hattie: “Uh-oh…looks like we’re in trouble.”

Butterfly: “We?!”

Hattie: “Oh come on, let’s freshen up before the show at the Folies Bergère tonight.

Shortly after they arrive another Rolls-Royce pulls up to Josephine Baker’s home and the door opens. Out steps Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, both appear to be quite drunk with Clark being more so than Vivien.

Hattie and Butterfly do their best to hide their faces from the reporters as they stumble out of the car they are immediately surrounded by reporters and Nazi officials. They dodge the crowd and enter through the side entrance of the Baker residence.

Reporter: “Mr. Gable, is it true that you are here to support the King and Miss McDaniel?”

Clark: “Uh…Yeah, I guess so. What’s the big deal anyways? A lot of people don’t know this, but my…”

Vivien, barely able to keep aim her drunken finger onto his lips, goes: “Shhhh-hoooosh!”

Clark: “What I’m saying is…Love is Love!”

Vivien: “Wheee! We should PRINT THAT ON A SHIRT!”

Laughter erupts from the crowd.

Moments later King Edward and Hattie McDaniel emerge from the house and a hush falls over the crowd, and for what seemed like an eternity flashes popped and all you could hear is the sound of film cameras rolling. Hattie is wearing a white Christian Dior gown and King Edward fresh Tuxedo, Hattie looked at Edward with a deep loving stare, and Edward smiled. And the throng of people let out an audible gasp. They both proclaim their love for one another and then kiss in front of reporters. They embraced and the reporters snapped photos. Seconds later, the Nazi officials arrest both King Edward and Hattie McDaniel for breaking segregation laws. Butterfly and Vivien are moved to tears and Clark Gable comforts both women.

The news of the arrest quickly spread around the world, and photos of the two lovers are on the cover of every magazine. That iconic photo which now represents the universal power of love, and how it can conquer thrones.

The world is in shock, but Hattie and King Edward remain in love and undeterred by the situation. To spite the level best of the media, Edward and Hattie’s love and ensuing scandal did not end the rule of King Edward nor did it tarnish the crown, he would go on to reign another 40 years gaining favor among the Commonwealth of British nations that made the British empire wealthy and powerful.

The international scandal quieted soon after and Josephine Baker’s house was no longer the center of attention that it was during that Parisian Jazz Renaissance. But surprisingly, those in the UK accepted the union of King Edward and Hattie McDaniels and embraced her fully, giving her the title of Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of York. The King often commented on how proud he was that his country accepted Ms. Daniels as their own, putting aside their small differences, and how that stood in stark contrast to the closed mindedness Nazi occupying forces of Paris. The impact of their love story will forever remain ingrained in the hearts and minds of many, and in the end…showed that the British people were at heart a very loving and accepting people.

What if King Edward and Hattie McDaniel 82 years ago and challenged the systems and institutions that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle now challenge.

Yes, I’m actually researching this fictional piece I’m writing. Turns out, King Edward was born in 1894 and Hattie McDaniel was born in 1893. So they could have had a love affair. I want the piece to be funny, but most of all respectful to Hattie McDaniel, as much as a fictional comedic piece can be anyway. She’ll be liberated, but I think King Edward’s character, we can play with. I think by showing how Prince Harry’s great-grandfather gave up the throne for an American actress, much in the same way Prince Harry gave up his title for an American Actress 84 years later, we can draw parallels and play with the them of the recurrence of history. Even Diana’s and Dodi’s romance echoes this. How history keeps repeating until we think different thoughts and choose different actions. How love breaks down artifice. It could very well morph into a romantic comedy. Ms. McDaniels was a comedian, so I hope she would appreciate the story.

I think I want the British to accept Ms. Daniels and extend to her the role of Queen Consort. Researching if that would have been logistically possible in 1941 at the height of Hattie’s fame, when she would have caught the King’s eye. (it is an alternate reality) I want to do this to expose the hypocrisy of the British media. #EdwardandHattie #HarryandMeghan. I’ll run up to the line, but I won’t jump over it. Maybe.

The challenge for me is to get Hattie’s tone right, as I only know of her from her performances which…obviously was not her voice. So I’ll have to listen to her interviews and read what she wrote, it could easily turn bad if I don’t make that effort. Then there are the questions that arise from this experiment.

Questions:

What would be the implications of a King loving and marrying a woman of color in 1941?

How can I create a story that is both respectful and humorous to the legacy of Hattie McDaniel?

How would this story highlight the similarities between Prince Harry and King Edward’s stories?

How can we use this story to draw attention to the hypocrisy of the British media?

Lessons:

Love is greater than any prejudice or artifice.

History has a tendency to repeat itself.

We can learn from the past and use it to create a better future.

We should always strive to be respectful and mindful when telling stories about marginalized people.

The light this story could shed on Harry and Meghan is that their love follows an age-old pattern of royalty choosing unconventional partners, and how their story is a testament to the power of love in the face of prejudice and scrutiny. It could also demonstrate how the decision to choose love can be a revolutionary act that can spark change.

You have waited long enough loyal fans. Here’s our first draft. Enjoy!
