From the earliest days of the industry, minority groups were marginalized and underrepresented on both sides of the camera, from actors to writers and directors. From the lack of opportunities for people of color to the white-washing of characters of color, Hollywood has a long and sordid history of failing to include diverse voices in its storytelling. At the same time, Hollywood has seen a dramatic shift in recent years, thanks in no small part to the #OscarsSoWhite movement. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has taken steps to increase inclusion and representation among Oscar nominees, and earlier this year, they announced new rules that require films to meet certain criteria in terms of representation in order to be eligible for the Best Picture award. It’s no wonder then that Richard Dreyfuss, who won an Oscar in 1978, took issue with the new rules in a recent television interview, calling them “patronizing” and going so far as to say they made him “Wanna vomit”. How enlightening. But his comments ignore the fact that representation and inclusion in Hollywood are still far from where they should be, and that these measures are an important and necessary step towards achieving true equality in the industry.

Hollywood’s Long Affair with Racism and Sexism and that Doesn’t Make Richard Dreyfuss Wanna Vomit?

Take for example the fact that this year’s Oscars saw a historic win for Michelle Yeoh for Best Actress for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” but no Black actors were nominated for any of the acting categories. This is unacceptable and is a clear indication that more needs to be done to ensure that marginalized voices are included in Hollywood. The fact is that the film industry has long been dominated by white men, and progress towards true diversity and inclusion has been slow and painstakingly incremental. The Oscars’ new rules are a step in the right direction, and it’s unfortunate that Dreyfuss chooses to ignore the systemic exclusion of diverse voices in Hollywood. It’s time to recognize that something is inherently wrong with the lack of representation in the industry, and that the only way to truly address this issue is to take concrete steps towards inclusion. This includes supporting filmmakers and actors from diverse backgrounds, and providing them with the resources and opportunities they need to tell their stories. It’s time for Hollywood to embrace diversity and inclusion, and for Richard Dreyfuss and other critics of the Academy’s new rules to recognize that these measures are necessary in order to effect real change. We must all take responsibility for ensuring that all voices are heard and that everyone is included in our stories.

Michelle Yeoh has been celebrated for her victory at the SAG Awards, becoming the first Asian woman to win Best Actress. Despite the trolling and racist comments from some on the internet, Yeoh's win should be celebrated as a milestone for Asian representation in Hollywood. Yeoh's victory is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and talent, and should be seen as an inspiration to others looking to pursue their dreams. Yeoh's win is a reminder that the film and television industry is not immune to racism, and that it is still possible to break through the barriers and achieve success.

The first Asian woman to win Best Actress. I realize that my defending a BIPOC against racists will likely be taken down, so let me put them here, where they may be safer. Whenever Michelle Yeoh is on screen, it comes alive, and she really does give power and traction to her films.

The trolls and racists on the internet are coming after her, so let me defend Michelle Yeoh’s victory. Not simply because I’m a BIPOC actor and member of SAG who proudly voted for the first Asian woman to win Best Actress. But because I believe we have a duty to respond in a timely way against attacks against women, and all the more when they are tinged by racism and racial innuendo. The unwarranted criticisms of Michelle Yeoh do not stand up to reason and should not be accepted, not even in passing. I realize that my defending a BIPOC against racists will likely be taken down from social media, so let me put them here, where they may be safer. This is why I created Brego.com. So, let’s do this.

Such racist inspired comments. Allow me to reframe.

It’s an acting awards show.

Just say it’s because she’s Asian that it bothers you.

On her being born wealthy: Would you say the same of Taylor Swift…or Robert Downey Jr.? Or Jake Gyllenhaal, Darren Criss, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Adam Levine, Park Bo-gum, and Felicity Huffman and William H Macy?

Acting and doing it as a martial artist on Yeoh’s level not only represents days of hard work, but YEARS! And guess what

She chose that hard work path…and NOBODY handed that to her. So, get busy. and find your own success path.

Don’t criticize her looks, as most of you own a mirror and know the truth.

The dress, I cannot excuse. That might be fair game. Cheerio! There…much better.

And, if I’m picky I will say at times the writing suffers from lack of cohesion and this can make the character’s intent and objectives somewhat confusing. But even with these annoying flaws that would sink a lesser film (yes, I’m calling it a film even though it’s produced by Amazon Studio and the BBC for television) The English does something few television series can do, it has become art, and maybe even high art. No exaggeration.

First, I’m happy to see that the show’s three sets of directors appear to be BIPOC, or at the very least Latinx, native and female. This is a breath of fresh air.
The English is one of the best examples of the Western genre I’ve ever seen. A distillation of the best part of classic and Spaghetti Westerns, a beautiful reimagining that is a visual feast for the eyes and ears. A haunting melody, a work of art and superb acting all in one. This aspiring filmmaker has had their hopes renewed.
Few series for television rise to this level of artistry. The English is poetic, beautiful and well executed. This is the type of storytelling that gets people excited to pick up history books and to learn about Native American cultures, and speaking of which, the writers of The English tell us a story that seems respect the boundaries of historical facts. And it tells the story in a way that is fresh and new, where people are complex and they don’t all think or behave in predictable and boring ways. I found myself rushing to the computer to verify little historical details and all of them seemed to check out.

I’m a little bothered the SAG screener, that it’s not in full letterbox format, and I can’t tell if the elongated imagery is a design choice or an ode to the other letterbox films of the 70’s squished to TV size. Confusing. Hopefully SAG will also include subtitles…or this could my DVD player, but I’m not seeing them. The English is the type of filmmaking that makes you get excited about filmmaking. The score and production design are stunning. Just beautiful to watch.
\I haven’t done research on the writers but there are a lot of Latinx names on the production crew and cast….you can tell, it’s got flavor and rings true. #EmilyBlunt is Executive Producer, good to see what we can do when we are inspired to take action.

This essay by Edmund is an uplifting reflection on life and the opportunities presented to us by the world. It shares his journey from facing obstacles to finding his own path and creating a space for those who share "the good heart" to come together. The essay speaks from personal experience to create an emotional connection and encourages readers to strive for a more equitable and egalitarian world.

From my perspective. Web 3 has a lot to do with it. People wonder why I don’t do my art more, why I don’t write more, why I’m not acting. My mentor of many years told me, “Don’t let time get away from you, focus on your wriitng. You are a writer.” She couldn’t understand why I had to say, become a Forex and Crypto trader for a while, just as my friends and family didn’t understand why I had to become a long-term caregiver for a long time.

They said: “Can’t you just order your father Chinese food?” or “Wouldn’t your life be better without your father…” (Yes some “friend” actually said that)…and family, “Throw his stuff in the dumpster and put him in a nursing home.” These people are exactly the type of people who compelled me to take a different route in life. One that is more focused on the experience of life, my values, my beliefs, and taking the slow-road to success. I never really reacted when people told me these things, I was too busy. Both being a caregiver, but also learning, observing, and growing. Not just technically, but as a human being. Looking at nature, processing and healing my own traumas. I figured, the last thing the world needed was another asshole. So I took the slow path to success, with that in mind.

They don’t understand that I am writing, doing art and producing, albeit on a very low level. Bamboo grows beneath the surface of the soil for many years, and not until year seven or so does it grow where people can see it, then it becomes the fastest growing “tree” in nature. Not really a tree, but you get the metaphor. That’s the type of person I am…if a person tells me I can’t do something, that’s the thing I wanna do. I lay down roots and I get to work.

In this world there are millions of actors, writers and artists, but why is it for tech startups, for the decision-making positions, for media companies, those who craft the decisions that move culture, money, and environmental policy there are so few BIPOC owned companies? About 4-5% Black owned and as best I can tell even if you add women and minority owned the figure is still rather low. And within the Web 3 space, the numbers are likely non-existent.

And within the Web 3 space, we have a once in a generation opportunity to create true equity and a more egalitarian system. Yet, on a daily I am met with people who just want to turn it into a lifeless/soulless gated suburb. I say nothing, I make notes.

I don’t want to sit at any table I’m not wanted at, I will have my own table, and I’ll decide who is worthy to sit with me and my people. And here’s the twist, my people are the people with, what my Aunt Lee used to call, those with “the good heart”, irrespective of their race, color, class, sexual orientation, nationality or gender.
Keep a good heart and join me at the cool kid’s table by the window.

Veritas Tua, A short scene by Edmund J. Janas, II
May 21, 2022

Although this is technically a monologue, it is actually more powerful when performed as a scene. It is written with a non-binary actor in the speaking part, and the woman listening as the recipient of the message.

The speaking actor is mostly obscured, blurred or not seen in full. Attention to details of the scene, the woman’s reactions and the cafe, hardly ever on the speaker. The woman is fully engrossed in the other actor’s monologue. It’s clear she is coming off of a good cry, and is suddenly happy to see her friend and hear all they have to say. She listens to her friend intently. The actor listening is actually doing the hard work as she must respond, reflect…even laugh at the corny lines and over-the-top beliefs of her friend. Ultimately she comes to some personal revelations about what is being said. We must see her resolve in the end.

PERSON 1
“I am utterly sick and fed-up with people and their bullshit. Myself included. We are all, to some degree afraid to take a stand for what we feel is right. We can’t speak truth to anyone, because most people are too damn scared they will lose something…someone, followers, they’ll lose a job, social status or the god of all…money.

I know of very smart people with the solutions to some of society’s ills locked on the tip of their tongues but who are too terrified of losing things to use their voice! So they stay silent. For a job? A job that you will lose eventually anyway. A position. Afraid of blowback from speaking the truth?! Afraid you’ll look stupid, silly or weak? Afraid someone will stop loving you?

FUN FACT: If they stop loving you…it ain’t love.

But isn’t it true we become stupid, silly and weak in time if we do not live boldly? Life’s cruel and poetic justice, is that we all break down and we all die, or…at least, that’s another illusion we have bought into. (to barista) so….make mine a double carpe diem macchiato con panna, please. (returns back to young lady sitting opposite)

So why are you afraid to lose an illusion? These things are contrived and only exist in your mind, or worse…in the mind of others. You and your spirit, your capacity to love is the only thing that is real, the only thing that you get to keep. No, not romantic love. I’m talking about real power, real love. So act boldly, speak up, and act. The self-regard you get from standing in your truth will be far greater than any thing society can give or take away; and don’t fool yourself, society does take it away. But knowing that we stood in our truth… we get to keep it that for all the ages. (Pondering) As a very wise art teacher once told me. “Stop fudging around and draw!” (sips coffee)

Camera dollies back to reveal the young lady is sitting alone.

WAITRESS
Will someone be joining you?

YOUNG LADY
Presently

As the waitress walks away the young lady smiles and looks directly at the camera pulls back to reveal that the chair in front of her has been empty this whole time.

YOUNG LADY
(in the voice of her imaginary friend)
“No matter what the cost, speaking your truth is always worth it. It’s the only thing you can really control in this life, so make it count.”

As a biracial person, I’ve experienced discrimination from all sides—Black, White, and even other mixed individuals. This unique position gives me a sharp understanding of what it feels like to be unfairly targeted, which is why I relate so deeply to Meghan Markle. Her experience navigating relentless public attacks resonates with my own, especially when those attacks are rooted in misogynoir—the toxic intersection of racism and sexism directed at Black women.

One glaring example of this targeting comes from a self-proclaimed body language expert, Jesús Enrique Rosas, whose platform seems increasingly centered around attacking Meghan Markle. It’s both baffling and disheartening to see a man dedicate his energy to dissecting and criticizing a woman he doesn’t know, all while cloaking his hostility in the guise of “expert analysis.”

The Business of Hate
Hate has, unfortunately, become big business. With nearly half a million subscribers on YouTube, Rosas clearly knows how to capitalize on resentment. His critiques of Meghan go beyond objective analysis, veering into thinly veiled racism and personal attacks. What makes this even more egregious is that he, as a person of color, perpetuates the very systemic biases that harm marginalized communities, including his own.

What did Meghan Markle do to deserve this vitriol? Exist as a beautiful, poised, Black woman who married into royalty. That’s it. She didn’t lobby for power or privilege; she was minding her own business when Prince Harry pursued her. Yet her mere existence seems to trigger deep-seated insecurities and prejudices in people like Rosas.

Misogynoir in Action
It’s not just Rosas. I’ve seen the same visceral reaction from others, including some of my own Christian friends, who recoiled at the news of Meghan and Harry’s relationship. When pressed, they couldn’t articulate why they disliked her—they just did. The truth, whether they admit it or not, lies in their discomfort with seeing a Black woman succeed on a global stage.

This pattern is as old as time: Black women being demonized for breaking through barriers, excelling in spaces that weren’t built for them, and asserting their dignity in the face of systemic oppression. The Duchess of Sussex, like so many Black women before her, embodies grace under fire, but that doesn’t mean the attacks are any less damaging—or any less deserving of our collective condemnation.

Dangerous Rhetoric and Its Implications
Rosas’ attacks go beyond personal bias; they stoke resentment and reinforce harmful stereotypes. When people with platforms use their influence to tear others down, it has a ripple effect. It emboldens others to do the same, normalizing misogynoir and giving cover to prejudice under the guise of critique.

We should be clear: Meghan Markle’s existence as a biracial, Black woman married to a prince is not a crime. The real crimes lie elsewhere—among those who have perpetrated insurrections, enacted policies that separate families, and profited from division. Yet these individuals often escape similar scrutiny, showing how deeply ingrained our societal double standards are.

The Need to Take a Stand
As frustrating as it is to engage with this kind of negativity, we cannot remain silent in the face of injustice. People like Jesús Enrique Rosas perpetuate a cycle of hate and self-loathing that harms everyone, including themselves. Calling out this behavior is not about stooping to their level—it’s about drawing a line in the sand and refusing to accept the normalization of misogynoir.

For anyone who doubts the validity of these critiques, I encourage you to watch Rosas’ videos with a critical eye. His expressions, body language, and tone reveal much about his own biases. But more importantly, reflect on why figures like Meghan Markle elicit such visceral reactions from so many. It’s not about her actions—it’s about what she represents: a challenge to the status quo.

Final Thoughts
We all have a responsibility to dismantle the systems of hate that target Black women. Whether it’s on social media, in our communities, or within ourselves, we must actively resist the forces that seek to dehumanize and divide us. Meghan Markle’s story is a reminder of how far we still have to go, but also of the power of resilience and grace in the face of relentless adversity.

Let’s not let hate win. Let’s stand together, louder and stronger than ever, in support of every Black woman who dares to shine.

I really do want to see Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, even though it’s clearly a film geared towards females. I think #LeoGrande stands the chance of being interesting because it’s nice to see POC getting a positive representation of their sexuality on the big screen. I do have my reservations, and I certainly hope the film does not objectify the male sex worker to a great degree. I’m in favor of a little objectification, but it must be reasonable. My second hope is that white viewers do not see this film as an invitation to own Black and Brown bodies. Third please don’t make it a story exclusively about her getting her groove back. My third hope is that it doesn’t glamorize sex work, ignoring the human trafficking and horrific outcomes people have to live with.

This will be a tall order. Maybe I’m both ignorant of the industry and hopeful, that there exists a Mary Poppins or a Dobby of sex workers? (Sorry, Dobby was the only magical worker that did domestic chores…now it will be impossible to erase from our minds.) Maybe that’s social programming. One of things I hated about “Pretty Woman”. In life, it just doesn’t work out that way.I have mixed feelings about sex work as an industry. On one hand, I see them providing a very basic service for a very important human need. I believe it should be a thing.

Our government has been far too prudish about sexuality. Then on the other hand, there have been my run-ins with about five in my lifetime, no… we only crossed paths, or I knew of them. Five women, and one man. And truth be told, the man was just a ho who collected money, not even out of need it seemed, but rather for status. The five women I met did it for survival, and their lives were in no way glamorous.Would I ever hire or be one? Depends on who’s asking, but probably, and most likely not. Sex is about being wanted and desired by someone, inject money and it becomes a performative act. No, thank you.Would I judge someone negatively for being a sex worker? Nope. I would express appropriate concern for their safety, but little more. We have all types of corporate and political male hoes working around the clock and few judge them as bad. At least sex workers give some value for the money they receive.I’ll be sure to leave a review of this film once I get around to watching it. My earnest hope is that the topic is handled in a realistic and respectful way.l

“I have always relied on the kindness of strangers.” – Blanche Dubois

Every opportunity I’ve ever gotten was because someone believed in me. More often than not, that person was my Pop (R.I.P.) or a woman—usually a stranger. It’s a curious phenomenon: strangers have often believed in me more than friends or family I’ve known for decades. Life, it seems, is full of mysteries.

In my acting career, every gig I landed was because of women who vouched for me—women I barely knew, stepping up and saying, “Choose him.” This happened four times: once with a fellow actor, once with a set seamstress, and once with a production assistant—all on the first day we met. These weren’t powerful industry players, just kind souls looking out for a fellow artist. That generosity blows my mind to this day.

One story stands out. Back when I was a teenager, Cyndee, a good friend, barged into my editing suite at AIFL and declared, “There’s an audition downstairs, and you’re going now! I already filled out the paperwork for you!” She only knew I dabbled in acting in high school, yet her belief in me pushed me forward. That audition became a stepping stone, but nothing in my journey came easily. If I succeeded, it was because I worked for it. Getting into SAG, for example, was a maze of rules and loopholes, and I had to figure it out myself.

Cracking the Code to SAG
To join SAG (the Screen Actors Guild) back then, you needed three waivers from SAG productions. The catch? You couldn’t work on SAG productions unless you were already in SAG. Classic Catch-22. As a racially ambiguous actor who didn’t fit Boston’s stereotypical “type,” my chances of being chosen for waivers were slim.

But I discovered another way: the Taft-Hartley Act. By joining AFTRA (the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists), which had open enrollment if you could pay the fee, I created a pathway. If you were called to work on a SAG production as an AFTRA member, they had to waiver you. No exceptions. I paid my dues to both unions, and it was worth every penny. I didn’t wait to be chosen; I made my way in.

The Reality of Representation
Opportunities for racially ambiguous actors in Boston were rare. The industry prioritized white actors and occasionally included Black actors if they fit a specific mold. People like me—too ambiguous to fit neatly into one box—were often overlooked. I was called in to audition for Latino roles but was repeatedly asked, “Can you sound more… Latino?” It felt like being invited to a party where I wasn’t truly welcome.

My Latinx friends encouraged me to take those roles, saying, “Get that money and sort it out later.” But I resolved only to play Latinx characters in roles that painted the community positively, as so many were steeped in stereotypes.

Shifting Perspectives
Despite the challenges, there were bright spots. Anne Mulhall at LDI stood out as a progressive and inclusive casting director, offering me roles as Portuguese and even Italian. But the reality was stark: I was never called to audition for roles that matched who I truly was. I didn’t fit the mold for Black or white roles, leaving me adrift in an industry obsessed with labels.

Today, as I contemplate returning to acting, I’m determined to do so as myself. Age and experience have given me confidence in who I am. Perhaps the industry has evolved enough to embrace authenticity. Imagine a world where actors are cast for who they truly are—it must feel incredible to have that freedom.

For those tempted to comment on what I look like, save it. I’ve owned a mirror my entire life. I know who and what I am. And for every “What about Trevor Noah, Jesse Williams, or Halle Berry?”—those are exceptions, not the norm. They’re also extraordinarily talented and beautiful outliers. I’m just me, navigating a system that wasn’t designed for people like me.

But thanks to the kindness of strangers, I’ve made it this far. Here’s to all the people who saw something in me when others didn’t. You changed my life.

But most of it is compelling. I am overall enjoying it, but yesterday The Captain said, I was stationed in Spain during WW2. I’m no history expert, but that doesn’t seem possible based on the little I know. Franco was supposedly neutral during the war, but he helped the axis powers. I always feel most TV shows are written by young Ivy leaguers somewhere. I know they tend to hire them to write comedy fresh out of college. Correct me if I’m mistaken.

I’m learning a lot as I run to research things because they take such big liberties, but in researching and sifting fact from fiction, I’m SHOCKED by what I’m learning about Alien visitation…just mind-blown. Why so shocked? I notice the little details, that’s my thing.

Specifically the details W.W. “Mack” Brazel told friends and family and the way he hushed up and changed his story 180 degrees. The details are chilling.

I won’t get into why I’m a firm believer in Aliens and UFOs here, but I have good reason to believe. But the details the initial witnesses give, I’m a writer and I’ve worked with many a gifted writer, and none of them think to add details like some of these witnesses give. Many are backed up with hard evidence. But people can’t see what they don’t wanna see. It’s too much for our little minds to process.

In terms of the production, it’s really good. But I was a little jarred by the color grading that they started several episodes in, to make it look older, that really was confusing because it seemed like we were in flashback. But they make the UFOs look too big in post. As eye-witnesses say the Roswell UFO was small, 15′ x 40′ or something like that. This show has them like two stories high…that’s a stretch. In case you can’t find it on streaming, you can grab Project Bluebook on Blu-ray at Amazon.com
